General FAQ

This FAQ page has been created in response to the questions that we have received in past years about the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy.

I live outside the Dos Pueblos High School attendance boundary. Am I still eligible to apply to the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy?

The Santa Barbara School District allows intra-district transfers between its three high schools. In order to qualify for a transfer, students must live within the Santa Barbara School District's boundaries. If you live outside the Dos Pueblos High School attendance boundary but wish to attend Dos Pueblos High School, you must apply for an intra-district transfer. To apply to the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, parents must follow Santa Barbara School District procedures for intra-district transfer and have their child approved to attend Dos Pueblos High School. Information and deadlines regarding the intra-district transfer process can be found here.

I am not sure that I want to be in the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy (DPEA). How should I decide?

Use this website as a resource, and review the course descriptions to determine if they sound of interest to you. Also, consider attending one of the following events that offer opportunities to talk with current DPEA students and staff members and see the projects students work on in the program:

  • December 14, 2016: SBUSD Academy Showcase at Earl Warren Showgrounds from 5:00-7:00 pm

  • January 12, 2017: Dos Pueblos High School Open House for prospective students and their families from 6:30-8:00 pm

  • January 25, 2017: Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy Open House from 5:00-7:00 pm

  • Between December 1 - January 13: Students are invited to shadow a DPEA student during a regular school day to see what it is like to be a student in the DPEA at DPHS. To schedule a shadow day, please call the front office of DPHS at 968-2541 and ask to speak with Denise Irwin.

What if I am not sure if I want to be an engineer?

The Engineering Academy was not created in order to "groom" future engineers. It is a program for students who enjoy challenges and would like a unique opportunity to experience a more practical, project-based approach to learning science, engineering and sculpture.

How do I enroll in the Engineering Academy?

Approximately 100 students will be accepted into each new freshman class. To learn more about the admission process and to obtain an application, please click here.

Can I take some of the academy classes or do I have to take all of them?

This is a four-year program and is designed as such. The courses for the first three years are integrated so that students will experience a unique project-based education to prepare for the senior courses related to the Mechatronics team. It is required that students who enroll in the Engineering Academy do so with the intent of participating throughout all four years of high school.

Can I participate in both the IB program and the Engineering Academy?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to simultaneously meet the requirements of both of these programs given the demanding natures of their respective workloads. It is, however, possible to take individual IB courses as a student in the Engineering Academy as long as you ensure that you are fulfilling college admission and graduation requirements.

Is there tuition for the DPEA?

No, the DPEA is a program within the public Dos Pueblos High School, and there is no tuition to enroll in the program, including mechatronics.
