Frequently Asked Questions:
The Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy supervises a program of summer internships for its students who have completed their junior or senior year. The DPEA is actively seeking technical positions in which our students can benefit from real-world experience. DPEA students are highly-skilled and self-motivated, and the internship program has an excellent record of success.
Hours: The typical internship is 20 hours per week. This can vary depending on the sponsor and the student. Internships have ranged from 15 hours/week up to full-time positions.
Salary: All internships are paid positions with a range of pay from $8 to $12/hour depending on experience. At UCSB, some of the students receive a stipend for the summer in lieu of hourly pay. The students are paid directly and the DPEA is not involved in the compensation.
Starting Date and Length of Term: The starting date and length of term depends on the student and the sponsor. Most students are available for 8-10 weeks during the summer. Before applying for a position, we make certain that a student is available for at least 8 weeks. The internship will typically start as soon as the student is out of school in early June. Internships are scheduled around the students planned family summer vacations.
Evaluation and Mentoring: It is expected a mentor is assigned to a student intern. The level of mentoring required depends on the student and the type of position. Some positions are structured as summer jobs and the students are helping with parts and documentation. Some positions have a strong focus on learning how to use Solidworks in conjunction with small engineering projects. Most positions are a mixture of assisting in engineering tasks and learning engineering technology. At the end of the summer, the student fills out a survey to evaluate the internship and this evaluation is reviewed by the DPEA. If the internship position does not require mentor oversight, we suggest hiring one of the graduating seniors as they have significantly more experience and can function with less supervision.
